Héctor was born in 1968 in Mexico City. His career didn’t begin as well as one might expect. The Mexican designer revealed that he just realized his passion during college when a professional adviser handed him an industrial design book with the first 20 lines summarizing Héctor’s different inclinations. “I had no notion what I wanted to do with my life when I was younger.” I was interested in technological disciplines like robots, but I’d never heard of industrial design before. From 1997 to 2001, he was a Design Professor at UIA before becoming Design Director at CENTRO Study House, where he founded the Industrial Design Degree. Héctor decided to start his multidisciplinary design firm, Esrawe Studio, in 2003, and it is currently acknowledged as one of the world’s top design references.

Esrawe Studio is a multidisciplinary design firm that specializes in everything from furniture, objects, and interiors to architecture, public space installation, and museography. “I didn’t want to draw a boundary between all of the subjects that I’m interested in because my vision is largely tied to creation.” I was able to work with a variety of professions and develop a collaborative mentality that allowed me to explore all of the sectors that I was interested in as a designer.”

The beginning of the designer’s creative process for each assignment has varied over time. What began as a chapter in which the team concentrated solely on the client’s needs has evolved into wholly different procedures in which context and narrative play a key role. “Before I pick up a pencil, I do research and diagnostic procedures to develop the project’s story.” So it’s progressed in a different way; we work on little projects (like the shinu candle) or large designs (like the Arca showroom in Guadalajara), but both have the same basic process applied in different scales and schedules,” said Héctor Esrawe.

There’s no denying that the modern design concept has developed in recent years, especially in light of the recent epidemic, but it hasn’t all been for the worst. He believes that as a civilization, we have learned to appreciate the small things that were previously disregarded; yet, Héctor’s concern for the natural world has always been present in his work since the beginning of his career. The Mexican designer is currently working on a three-room hotel near Tulum, which is one of the most intriguing projects he is currently working on.

There are no secret recipes for success in the design field, according to him; he feels it all begins with being “aware, rigorous, and understanding the impact that our profession can have in transforming a negative component into a positive thing for the world.”

In the heart of São Paulo, Brazil, interior design studio Electrix Design amazed their clients with an opulently stunning residential space, mixing European Classic, Art Deco and tropical accents. “This venture to build an 18th century Russian Palace in the 21st century was a real challenge. However, I have only the fondest memories of it. The years spent working on this 3,000-square meter project were a great pleasure. Because of his vision and his background, the client challenged me intellectually and professionally. This began with our first meeting when he quizzed my knowledge and aesthetics in a way that was more like an oral examination of a doctoral candidate, than a typical business meeting!”

The goal of these 3 inspiring projects was to create the most luxury design residences in Europe. “In Vienna (Austria), it is the Schottenring Palace, a historical building, which is in the process of being converted in the highest standard apartments according to my design plans. I collaborate in prestigious constructions operations in Mayfair, in London, and in Moscow in Malaya Bronnaya.”

Comité De Proyectos inspiring contemporary projects have been recognized in multiple national and international publications, such as Vogue México, Deezen, Vertical Paris, Index Design, Curbed, AD Russia, among others. The award-winning design team won an Honorable mention for Esthetic, Binomios Collection – Design Week Mexico 2016 and Restaurant & Bar Product Design Awards and have participated in many design exhibitions in Mexico.

Passionate about the world of interior design and product design, the Mexican design duo from Comité De Proyectos thinks that the interior design profession can be quite overwhelming. “You are one day deciding the materials of a design project and at the same time the form or proportions of particular furniture for another project.” Andrea Flores and Lucía Soto from Comité De Proyectos explained that the interior design industry is a little bit more exciting than other areas, like architecture, because is the quickest to achieve their results.

“One of the best parts compared with, for example, our sister discipline: architecture is that all that was in your mind or on a sketch, in less than a  month or two, can become reality. The results in interior design are pretty quick. Somehow you’re always solving small problems to ensure the product or project still has the initial feeling and that technical problems don’t kill that feeling.”

The Mexican interior designers from Comité De Proyectos explained that being an Industrial design can have a lot of positive facts, however, it also has some negative issues. “Another thing we love from being an industrial designer is that you can always be improving designs; the bad part of it is that it can never finish.”

After a two year break in the interior design industry, Andrea Flores and Lucía Soto had a big return by creating unique and creative interior design projects with an inspiring new vision. “We’ve returned to a design one or two years later and achieve a newer and better version than the original. There’s always a detail, a material or a line that, if you change it, can express better what you wanted to express or take the design in a very different product.” Like many renowned designers, the Mexican designers from Comité De Proyectos when questioned about future ambitions explained that they have the goal to be part of a big interior design project “where we have all the cards open to design in order to be able to make a statement in the space. Maybe a retail space or a hotel.”

All of Comité De Proyectos inspiring projects are connected to the client’s expectations, needs and dreams, thanks to a fabulous partnership created by the design duo. “We tend to communicate very practically and direct so that work talk by itself. We love to collaborate with them. We’re always looking forward to working with other designers, architects, etc.”

People ask these incredible interior designers to create beautiful and functional projects so that their daily routine can be upgraded with simple details. “Our client type is people mainly in their 30-40’s trying to achieve better spaces for their daily life. This amazing coffee and bookshop project its “a small space part of a 50’s building where you can find many buildings like this, so it has a little bit of Art Deco hints and that is the inspiration of the project.” Besides this bespoke commercial project,  Andrea Flores and Lucía Soto are also working on the interior design of a country house in Valle de Bravo for a big family. “The inspiration for this massive residential project is around raw materials, a lot of stone and wood.”

Let us start our guide with one of the most important markets in the world: North-America! In this section, we’ll focus on some of the most popular and high-demand North-American Interior Designers and Architects that we all know and love! Let us start with two icons of North American Design: Peter Marino and Bunny Williams.

The legendary Bunny Williams is one of the Great Interior Designers of North America! She opened her interior design company in 1988, after over 20 years of working for a decorating studio Parish-Hadley Associates. In this market, we must stand out four amazing and popular interior designers that are known for their contemporary style and the excellent use of color in their projects: Kelly Wearstler, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Nate Berkus and Marmol Radziner! Nicknamed the Color Queen of the US Interior Design Industry, Kelly Wearstler is one of the most popular and prestigious North-American contemporary interior designers out there. Even though she’s considered an all-around interior designer,  she tends to favour more modern, elegant and refreshing pieces and colour palates to complete her amazing and well focus design vision!

He is a multi-award-winning Los Angeles based interior designer and is renowned for his broad range of styles and eclectic, yet sophisticated and always inviting interiors. Martyn has been consistently named as one of the world’s top 100 interior designers by the top magazines in the world and his colourful modern decor style is just as unique as he is.

Speaking of Architects, let us explore some of the Top US Architects! Also based in LA we have HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates, an international hospitality design firm headquartered in Santa Monica, California. Leading the hotel design industry since 1965, HBA is the largest hospitality design firm in the world and remains deeply concerned about the pulse of changing industry trends, which is governed by today’s sophisticated traveller. HBA’s international presence and depth of experience enable them to identify interior design trends at their source, make predictions about new directions and influence design standards worldwide and that’s why they are so popular!

Next to HBA in importance and popularity within the US Architectural Market, we have the iconic Rockwell Group. Founded in New York in 1984 by one of the top interior designers and architects of the US: David Rockwell, the Rockwell Group creates the most extraordinary contract and artistic designs all around the world. With offices in New York, Madrid and Shanghai, this Design Group specializes their professional range in a wide array of work from luxury hospitality, cultural, and healthcare projects, to educational, product, and set design. A masterful example of luxury architecture!

We’ve started this section by exploring two legends of the interior design industry, so it’s fitting we also explore the basis of one of the biggest living architectural legends of this market: Frank Gehry! This award-winning architect has spent more than a half-century meddling the very essence of design within the architecture industry. All in all, Gehry designed and projected more than two hundred iconic buildings worldwide. We can highlight the iconic Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao in Spain or the Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris, France as iconic examples of Gehry’s unique and contemporary style!

France

Next to the US, France is another pivotal market of the Interior Design Industry. Home to some of the top Luxury Bands and Designers in the World, France has a huge variety of top and popular interior designers that helped shape the industry. One of those top designers was Alberto Pinto, one of the most iconic French Designers of all time that died in 2012. His legacy was kept alive by his studio, Alberto Pinto Studio, that till this day is considered one of the most prominent design studios of Europe.

India Mahdavi, Phillipe Starck, Jean Nouvel, Jean Louis Deniot and Patrick Jouin are other Top Examples of the French Interior Design Industry. Mahdavi, for instance, is one of the Most Popular Designers of the entire Industry. Architect, Designer and Scenographer, Mahdavi is the perfect example of an Empowered Woman! Mahdavi managed to overcome her complex cultural background in Iran and managed to showcase her amazing natural talent in Paris. By doing so, she became one of the most successful Female Interior Designers of France and the World! She loves using colour in her modern projects and that’s why she’s dubbed the Color Queen of the Design World!

Internationally acclaimed French creator, designer and architect Philippe Starck is an untiring and rebellious citizen of the world, who considers it his duty to share his ethical and subversive vision of a fairer planet. He’s known for creating unconventional places and objects whose purpose is to be “good” before being beautiful. No wonder, Starck is considered a top designer and, most of all, a top influencer! The same goes for the iconic Patrick Jouin,  a designer whose creativity finds expression in industrial design for the decorative arts.  Having worked with top manufacturers Cassina, Kartell, Alessi, Puiforcat, JC Decaux or Fermob in exceptional projects, Patrick found a place in the landscape of international design where only a few know how to evolve with both ease and strength as he does.

Italy

We all know the legendary interior designers Gio Ponti or Alessandro Mendini and how their work influenced some of the top Italian Designers of today, namely the famous Dimore Studio and Antonio Citterio. These two giants of Italian Design are clearly two of the most prominent Italian Names of Today’s Italian Design Industry and are extraordinary examples of a Modern an Elegant style that puts the Classic Italian Style into good use.

Joining a powerful presence within the Design industry, Italy is also known for its strong Architectural Industry. Gio Ponti, Aldo Rossi, Carlo Scarpa or Giuseppe Pagano are just a few examples of the 20th Century Architectural Legends that helped put Italy on the Architectural Map! We easily associate them to several high-end projects and the introduction of several new techniques and designs that revolutionized the field. Those legends also influenced the careers and the work of some of the most prolific and prominent Contemporary Architects of today’s Italy, like Renzo Piano or Piero Lissoni.

United Kingdom

Another heavyweight country of the Architecture Industry is the United Kingdom. We can’t talk about major Influences for today’s Architectural Market without talking of Zaha Hadid, a legendary architect that, unfortunately, passed away in 2016.

A proof of Hadid’s power, talent and influence happened in 2004, when she became the first female recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, an equivalent to the Nobel Prize! Her complete career clearly demonstrates the merit of this and other triumphs, because no one knew how to design a building quite like Hadid! Her buildings are distinctively neo-futuristic, characterised by the “powerful, curving forms of her elongated structures with multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry to evoke the chaos of modern life”. Her buildings and her legacy will live one thanks to the work that’s currently being elaborated by her former studio: Zaha Hadid Architects.

David Chipperfield is another Legend of the British World of Architecture. Next to Hadid, Chipperfield is an icon of Modern British Architectural Style. Since the foundation of his own studio in 1985. Head Architect David Chipperfield developed a diverse international body of work including cultural, residential, commercial, leisure and city projects, as well as master planning exercises. This practice has won more than 100 international awards and citations for design excellence, including Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Royal Fine Art Commission (RFAC) and American Institute of Architects (AIA) awards, as well as the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2007, and the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award in 2011.

We couldn’t end this British presentation without mentioning Kelly Hoppen and Tom Dixon! They are like the Queen and King of British Interior Design and their amazing, elegant and powerful work speaks for them. With a strong background in British Style and Design, both Hoppen and Dixon managed to revolutionize the entire Design Industry in Great Britain and presented British Design Lovers with some amazing design examples and projects that perfectly showcase their creativity.

Asia

If you live in India or ever visited India, then you probably heard of one of the biggest Interior Design Sensations of the recent years: Twinkle Khanna.

She’s an author, newspaper columnist, film producer, former film actress and interior designer that’s considered one of the biggest Indian Influences within the Design Industry! After leaving the acting business, Khanna ventured into interior designing and, currently, is the co-owner of The White Window, a chain of interior designing stores which operates in Mumbai. Even though she doesn’t have a professional degree and learned the design skills required by working with an architect for two years, Khanna is enjoying quite a success in this industry and, in recent years, has produced a wide range of spectacular design projects,

But when we talk about Design and Architecture in Asia we usually think of bigger contemporary names with more credits worldwide. Names like Ptang Studio or  Ab Concept. These two architectural studios have been presenting some major Architectural Projects in Asia and are paving the way for the New Generation of Asian Architects and New Asian Styles.

Even though the future belongs to top creators like Ptang or AB Concept, we mustn’t forget the past and the legends that helped grow the Asian Design Industry. One of those legends is the famous Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Known worldwide as a Master Creator, Tadao Ando is a self-taught architect whose approach to architecture and landscape was categorized by architectural historian Francesco Dal Co as “critical regionalism”. Truth be told, Ando is the perfect example of Cultural Architectural because the simplicity of his architecture emphasizes the concept of sensation and physical experiences that are influenced by the Japanese and Asian culture.

Central & South America

The Campana Brothers (Humberto Campana and Fernando Campana) are two Brazilian Designers that, together, founded the world-renowned Estudio Campana. They are the proud and glory of the Brazilian Interior Design Industry and in their Projects and Products, the Campana use their Brazilian roots to create some design magic!

Mexico also has a powerful list of grand Designers and Architects that helped shaped the Culture of Design in the Americas. The late and iconic designer Luis Barragan is clearly one of the most famous names of the Mexican Design History. His unique style and passion for Mexican craftsmanship transformed him in a Legend of Mexican Design and, till this day, his projects and legacy are used of powerful and positive examples for new designers. One of the many designers that got inspired by Barragan’s legacy is Emiliano Godoy. With a strong ethical stance, Emiliano Godoy’s designs focus on environmental and social products. He uses design as a tool with which he develops new products and practices that can be more sustainable for the future, but always with the concern of including the spirit of Mexican Design’s History to every single one of his products!

European Union

We’ve talked about Italian, French and British designers, but the entire European Union is, in fact, a Top Market for the Design Industry. Within the EU Borders, we can find some of the most amazing Designers and Architects in the world. For instance, in the Netherlands, we find 2 of the biggest names of today’s Design Industry: Piet Boon and Marcel Wanders.

Piet Boon is one of the most relevant and iconic designers of our time and clearly belongs to the list of the most famous Dutch architects and interior designers of all time. Together with his creative director Karin Meyn, Piet leads his own team at the Piet Boom Studio that, in the past few years, was responsible for some of the most exquisite projects in the Netherlands! If Boon is part of the Dutch Design Hall of Fame, then what can we say about Marcel Wanders. He’s without a doubt an admired product designer that’s regarded by many as a unique design force in the design world. He has made it his personal mission to “create an environment of love, live with passion and make our most exciting dreams come true” and we can say that his accomplishing it! His work excites, provokes, and polarises, but never fails to surprise for its ingenuity, daring and singular quest to uplift the human spirit, and entertain.

In Spain, we can also find two stunning examples of EU Design Royalty: Santiago Calatrava and Patricia Urquiola! Calatrava is one of Spain’s Top Architects and it’s safe to say that the entire collection of his work can easily distinguish itself as innovative and creative. His work has a unique signature, but here are some projects that we can definitely point out as some of the most iconic projects of Calatrava’s extense portefólio, namely the WTC Transportation HUB in New York or the Montjuic Communications Tower in Barcelona.

Another top name form Spain’s Design Scene is Patricia Urquiola. She’s a famous interior designer, architect and designer that is known internationally by her great designs that are suitable for so many projects. She also works with known furniture companies such as Molteni, Moroso or Boffi and, in recent years, she contributed to the Design World with some revolutionary design ideas.

Within the Architecture Industry, we must also highlight Portugal’s Alvaro Siza Viera, Denmark’s Bjarke Ingels and Poland’s Daniel Libeskind! These three iconic Architects are known worldwide for the quality of their work and they are amongst the most recognizes and popular architects of the world.

The Arizona native developed a deep passion for design and honed her curatorial eye studying eminent historians. She received her master’s in fine and decorative art from the prestigious Sotheby’s Institute of Art. She then served as a director at Thomas O’Brien’s Aero and spent five years as the design director of noted mid-century specialist Lin-Weinberg Gallery in New York City.

Her exuberance and expertise have made Amy a sought-after speaker and panelist at conferences and in forums around the world. In 2005, she co-created the Design Miami fair to showcase the most significant purveyors of vintage and contemporary furnishings internationally. Running concurrently with Art Basel Miami Beach, Design Miami (along with its more recent affiliate Design Miami Basel) has become a must for serious collectors globally.

Amy Lau Design published a monograph in 2011, and Amy accepted an honorary doctorate from New York School of Interior Design the following year. She served as a spokesperson for Benjamin Moore’s 2010-2011 print, television, and online campaign “Paint with the Very Best.” She has designed spaces for renowned show houses like Kips Bay in New York and has created distinctive interior installations for Kohler, Bergdorf Goodman, and the Showtime television network.

The firm completed an exclusive boutique for Elie Tahari in East Hampton, New York, and is creating the home furnishings showroom Maviar in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Amy Lau has also designed an array of patterned cowhide rugs and pillows for Kyle Bunting, unique Heath Ceramics mosaic tiles, colorful wool-and-silk rugs for Doris Leslie Blau, tie-dye wall coverings for Maya Romanoff, and a vibrant fabric collection of contemporary prints, embroideries and wovens exclusively for S. Harris.
