Héctor was born in 1968 in Mexico City. His career didn’t begin as well as one might expect. The Mexican designer revealed that he just realized his passion during college when a professional adviser handed him an industrial design book with the first 20 lines summarizing Héctor’s different inclinations. “I had no notion what I wanted to do with my life when I was younger.” I was interested in technological disciplines like robots, but I’d never heard of industrial design before. I didn’t have to read any farther after she handed me the book because all of my interests were integrated into that one line.”

From 1997 to 2001, he was a Design Professor at UIA before becoming Design Director at CENTRO Study House, where he founded the Industrial Design Degree. Héctor decided to start his multidisciplinary design firm, Esrawe Studio, in 2003, and it is currently acknowledged as one of the world’s top design references.

Esrawe Studio is a multidisciplinary design firm that specializes in everything from furniture, objects, and interiors to architecture, public space installation, and museography. “I didn’t want to draw a boundary between all of the subjects that I’m interested in because my vision is largely tied to creation.” I was able to work with a variety of professions and develop a collaborative mentality that allowed me to explore all of the sectors that I was interested in as a designer.”

The beginning of the designer’s creative process for each assignment has varied over time. What began as a chapter in which the team concentrated solely on the client’s needs has evolved into wholly different procedures in which context and narrative play a key role. “Before I pick up a pencil, I do research and diagnostic procedures to develop the project’s story.” So it’s progressed in a different way; we work on little projects (like the shinu candle) or large designs (like the Arca showroom in Guadalajara), but both have the same basic process applied in different scales and schedules,” said Héctor Esrawe.

There’s no denying that the modern design concept has developed in recent years, especially in light of the recent epidemic, but it hasn’t all been for the worst. He believes that as a civilization, we have learned to appreciate the small things that were previously disregarded; yet, Héctor’s concern for the natural world has always been present in his work since the beginning of his career. The Mexican designer is currently working on a three-room hotel near Tulum, which is one of the most intriguing projects he is currently working on.

There are no secret recipes for success in the design field, according to him; he feels it all begins with being “aware, rigorous, and understanding the impact that our profession can have in transforming a negative component into a positive thing for the world.”
